SUBJECT: Dr. Alice Poehls Appointed University Registrar
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Alice C. Poehls as university registrar, effective September 12, 2011.
As university registrar, Dr. Poehls will
lead the effort to provide continuous improvement, innovative processes,
technology enhancements, and best practices to accomplish the Office of
the Registrar’s mission and strategic goals. Her responsibilities
include oversight of the office’s four
functional units: student records services, academic services,
information technology, and operations. Working collaboratively with the
schools and colleges, AU Central, OIT, and other campus administrative
units, Dr. Poehls will assess current support levels provided by the
registrar’s office and identify areas where improvements are needed. One
of her first key assignments is to continue the recent implementation
of the office’s revised mission and comprehensive reorganization.
A recognized change agent, Dr. Poehls
brings to AU a distinguished record of administrative accomplishments
and leadership experience implementing integrated administrative
systems. As assistant provost and university registrar at the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she re-organized the registrar’s
office, established document management and electronic record retention
processes, and synchronized degree and course inventories. While
leading the implementation of data and record management systems as
registrar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Poehls
created and assumed leadership of the Office of Graduate Admissions and
Administrative Services. As director of admissions and records at the
University of North Dakota, which she describes as the greatest
challenge of her career, Dr. Poehls successfully led efforts to continue
registrar operations following the flood and fire that devastated the
campus and the city of Grand Forks in 1997. Most recently, she served as
senior Banner consultant with SunGard Higher Education, where she
provided organizational leadership to university clients.
In addition to being an accomplished
administrator, Dr. Poehls is an active member of the American
Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO)
and has held state and regional-level leadership positions in AACRAO’s
Midwest and North Dakota associations. Dr. Poehls’s connection to North
Dakota extends to her academic pursuits. She earned her BA in English
and speech, MA in speech, and PhD in English all from the University of
North Dakota.
AU was fortunate to have many outstanding
candidates apply for the registrar position. We commend the search
committee, assisted by consultant and former Princeton University
registrar, Tony Broh, for its thorough work that led to the selection of
Dr. Poehls. Please join us in thanking the search committee and in
welcoming Dr. Alice C. Poehls as the university registrar.
